Electric Furling Boom Inboard End
A 12 or 24 volt motor is housed within the inboard end of the furling mandrel. This installation method has many advantages over conventional mandrel driven furling booms. For one the Offshore Spars electric furling boom does not require any holes be cut in the mast. With a carbon or aluminum mast putting large holes in the mast near the Gooseneck is a structural concession and not something we believe is a good idea. The other major advantage to an inboard end mandrel mounted motor is the weight placement of the electric motor. Other furling boom manufacturers place their motors at the outboard end of the boom which creates a large moment arm when in rough seas or gybing. Our belief is that motor which is the heaviest single component in the boom should be mounted as close to the support and pivot point as possible to reduce and unnecessary moments.
A simple spherical outboard bearing is low maintenance and very reliable. Our in house designed and build spherical bearings can take very high loads and allow for both rotational and angular moments of the mandrel. These multiple degrees of freedom ensure that the mandrel will be properly supported and fully
operational under a wide variety of conditions.
A key feature of a furling boom is the rollers which serve as a way to guide the sail into the boom shell and help retain the mandrel when the sail is reefed. Our roller assemblies are built using high strength carbon fiber ribs which also help stiffen the boom section. Depending on the boom the rollers are made from a combination of stainless steel and Delrin to ensure a high load and low maintenance feature.
In order to aid furling a bolt rope foot track is installed in the middle of the mandrel. The track is installed at a 30 degree angle ahead of the furl direction, this allows the mandrel to start pulling on the foot of the sail before the tack and clew lashings tension and furl.
Motor Sizing and Options
The electric motor universal gooseneck toggle are supplied Bamar, an Italian company who is an industry leader in furling boom motor technology. The BFMESS motor is available in three sizes which are chosen dependent on the boats E dimension and required holding brake holding load.

The motor comes with a Boxtron electric control box which is mounted inside the boat and wired into the boat’s electrical system. The Boxtron controls all the booms hoist, furling and reef
functions and allows for adjustment of features such as brake holding power and furling speed.
Gooseneck Toggle Options
The boom gooseneck toggle comes in two versions, a standard toggle, or an emergency toggle. The emergency toggle will accept a winch handle or continuous drive drum which can be used in the event of a power loss on board. The below photos show the emergency toggle and it’s two emergency options.
